My Background

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design and a Master of Science in Architecture from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My experience in both areas has given me a unique perspective and understanding of how the two connect. Gaining an understanding of how people interact within their environment led me to my choice of interior design as my base area of study and then I pursed my masters in architecture. Recognizing that the physical space within a building influences multiple facts in how the exterior is shaped and performs helped me in developing the knowledge of how the two interact.

My Inspiration

My interest in architecture goes deeper than the spaces themselves. My goal is to design spaces that are accessible for all.

Chris Downey, a blind architect, is one of my most important professional inspirations.

"In this world, there are only two types of people those who have a disability and those who haven't found theirs yet in life."
                Chris Downey
                (Blind Architect)

I’m inspired by how Chris took his disability, something that many people would think is a negative in life, and used to become a stronger architect.in doing he became an advocate for those who are blnd to share what they face daily. Chris’ experience has helped me look further into how design can asist, and not burdon, those who encounter life differently.

As a student, I had a few experiences that helped me to understand how architecture can play a role in how people with disabilities interact with their environment.

I had the opportunity to mentor another student with a special visual disability called retinitous pigmentosa. He taught me to closely examine how people with disabilities may struggle in the built environment and how be a advocate in the area of design.

This mentoring experience led me to focus on accessibility in my senior Interior Design project with the Nebraska Commission for the Blind & Visualy Impaired. I learned how valuable it is to help our community and those who are blind or visually imparied.
